Cookie policy

This page lists every cookie this website sets, what each one is for and how long it stays on your device. Last reviewed 17 August 2026.

The short version

A few cookies are needed to make the site work at all, and we set those without asking because the site cannot function without them. Everything else, which for us means Google Analytics, is optional. Nothing optional is set unless you press Accept on the notice at the bottom of the page. If you ignore that notice, or press Reject, no analytics cookie is ever written.

You can change your mind whenever you like using cookie settings, which reopens the notice.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. It can be read back on your next visit, which is how a site remembers things like whether you are signed in. Some of the same rules cover other kinds of browser storage, so where we use those instead we have said so below.

Cookies we set because the site needs them

These do not ask for permission, because the site would not work properly without them. They carry no advertising and are not shared.

NamePurposeHow long it lasts
PHPSESSID Keeps a staff member signed in while they use the admin area. It is only set if you sign in, so an ordinary visitor never receives it. Until the browser is closed
jfCookieConsent Remembers whether you accepted or rejected analytics, so you are not asked on every page. This one is kept in local storage rather than a cookie, which means rejecting leaves you with no cookie from us at all. Until you clear your browser storage

Cookies set only if you accept

We use Google Analytics to see which pages people actually read, so we know what is worth writing more of. It tells us about pages and devices, not about individuals, and we have it configured to shorten visitor IP addresses. It still counts as optional, so it stays switched off until you say yes.

NamePurposeHow long it lasts
_ga Set by Google Analytics to tell one visitor apart from another without identifying either. 2 years
_ga_0VFQDGJV73 Set by Google Analytics to keep track of a single visit to this particular site. 2 years

Google acts as our processor for this and holds the data on our behalf. Their own explanation of these cookies is on the Google privacy and terms site.

Cookies set by our hosting

Two further cookies, timezone and humans_21909, arrive from the server rather than from anything on the page. They appear to relate to how our host handles automated traffic. We have asked our hosting provider to confirm their exact purpose and duration, and will update this page as soon as they do. We do not use either of them for analytics, advertising or profiling.

Content loaded from other companies

Our review rating is displayed using a widget from Trustpilot. Loading it means your browser contacts Trustpilot, which will see your IP address in the same way any website you visit does. We did not observe the widget writing cookies to your device, but Trustpilot decides what its widget does, so their own privacy terms govern it rather than ours.

Turning cookies off in your browser

Whatever you choose here, your browser has its own controls. You can block or delete cookies for any site from the privacy or settings menu in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. Blocking everything will stop parts of most websites working, including the sign in on ours, which is why we keep the necessary list as short as we can.

Changes to this page

If we add a cookie, or change what an existing one does, we will update this page and ask again where the law requires it. The date at the top tells you when it was last reviewed.
